Sri Maha Bodhi (The sacred Bo-Tree)
Jaya Sri Maha Bodhi, located in Sri Lanka, is considered the oldest authenticated tree in the world, with a history dating back 2,200 years. It is one of the most revered places in the country and belongs to the family of trees known as 'asvastha' in Sanskrit. The tree's religious significance is reflected in the name given to it by botanists, 'ficus religiosa'.
Pilgrims can enter the Maha Bodhi premises through four gates, with the oldest being the northern gate. The entrance is an impressive experience as visitors pass between guard stones and intricately carved moonstones before ascending a flight of stone steps. The compound is busy with pilgrims walking around or worshipping on the sand. However, visitors are not allowed to enter the upper terrace where the Sri Maha Bodhi is situated.
