Sri Maha Bodhi (The sacred Bo-Tree)
Pilgrims can enter the Maha Bodhi premises through four gates, with the oldest being the northern gate. The entrance is an impressive experience as visitors pass between guard stones and intricately carved moonstones before ascending a flight of stone steps. The compound is busy with pilgrims walking around or worshipping on the sand. However, visitors are not allowed to enter the upper terrace where the Sri Maha Bodhi is situated.
